Forward Deployed Engineers

DEDICATED FORWARD DEPLOYED ENGINEERS

What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

A Forward Deployed Engineer is a customer-facing technical specialist who works close to the business problem, users, data, and operating environment. Instead of receiving a fixed specification and developing in isolation, an FDE collaborates directly with stakeholders to understand requirements, identify constraints, build the solution, integrate it with existing systems, and support its deployment.
This model is especially valuable for AI and complex software initiatives that require experimentation, system integration, workflow customization, and continuous feedback before they can deliver meaningful results.

FROM REQUIREMENTS TO PRODUCTION

How Is a Forward Deployed Engineer DifferentFrom a Traditional Software Developer?

A traditional software developer is usually responsible for building features within an established product plan or technical specification. A Forward Deployed Engineer works across discovery, engineering, integration, deployment, and adoption.
FDEs evaluate how a solution will function with real business data, existing systems, security requirements, and user workflows. They can rapidly test assumptions, resolve implementation barriers, and adapt the solution based on real-world feedback. The objective is not simply to deliver code—it is to produce a working solution that creates measurable business valu

EMBEDDED COLLABORATION

How Does an SDI Forward DeployedEngineer Work With My Team?

SDI selects Forward Deployed Engineers based on the technical requirements of the engagement as well as their ability to communicate with business and technical stakeholders. Your FDE can join your established communication channels, planning sessions, development tools, and reporting processes.
Work remains visible through clearly defined priorities, regular progress updates, tested code, documented decisions, and frequent stakeholder feedback. The engineer collaborates with your team while bringing the broader support of SDI’s AI, software, cloud, data, mobile, embedded systems, and product-engineering specialists.

FORWARD DEPLOYMENT CAPABILITIES

What Can an SDI Forward DeployedEngineer Help Implement?

  1. 1

    AI Implementation and Customization

Implement and adapt AI agents, LLM applications, retrieval-augmented generation systems, computer vision solutions, predictive models, and intelligent automation around your business requirements.

  2. 2

    Data and System Integration

Connect AI and software solutions with your databases, APIs, business applications, cloud platforms, data pipelines, and operational systems.

  3. 3

    Production Deployment

Move AI prototypes and software initiatives into secure, reliable production environments with the infrastructure, testing, monitoring, and operational controls required for ongoing use.

  4. 4

    Workflow Automation

Study existing business processes and build intelligent workflows that reduce repetitive work, improve decision-making, and connect people with the information and actions they need.

  5. 5

    Model Evaluation and Optimization

Evaluate output quality, accuracy, latency, reliability, and cost using real use cases and business-specific requirements. FDEs can refine prompts, retrieval systems, model selection, guardrails, and application logic based on measurable results.

  6. 6

    Customer-Specific Deployment

Adapt an existing platform or product for a particular customer, industry, data environment, security requirement, or operational workflow.

  7. 7

    Physical AI and Connected Systems

Connect AI systems with sensors, intelligent equipment, embedded devices, laboratory tools, manufacturing systems, and other programmable hardware. SDI is also exploring applications of Anthropic’s Model Hardware Standard (MHS) for safely connecting AI agents with physical devices.

  8. 8

    Adoption and Knowledge Transfer

Support testing, documentation, training, rollout, and technical handoff so your internal teams can confidently use, operate, and expand the deployed solution.

WHEN TO HIRE AN FDE

When Does a Company Needa Forward Deployed Engineer?

A Forward Deployed Engineer may be the right fit when:

An AI pilot works in testing but has not reached production.

A platform needs significant customization for your data or workflows.

Your internal team lacks specialized AI or integration expertise.

Multiple systems, APIs, or data sources must work together.

Requirements will become clearer through testing and user feedback.

A solution must satisfy specific security, infrastructure, or operational requirements.

You need an engineer who can communicate with both business and technical stakeholders.

A customer deployment requires hands-on technical implementation.

Software or AI must connect with physical devices or equipment.
